A specialized, workshop designed for DPs and visual storytellers, focusing on the art and craft of cinematic lighting. Over 12 intensive days, participants will explore foundational and advanced lighting techniques through practical exercises and scene-based setups. The program covers key concepts such as light quality, direction, and color temperature, as well as the history and evolution of film lighting tools and methods. Participants will learn core setups like three-point lighting, how to shape and control light using diffusers, gels, flags, bounces, and how to integrate practical and natural light sources into their designs. Special attention is given to lighting for mood, genre, and storytelling, with discussions around high-key vs. low-key lighting, motivated vs. unmotivated light, and the emotional effect of different lighting choices. The workshop also introduces participants to the roles and responsibilities within the Grip and Electric (G&E) department, emphasizing set safety, gear management, and team communication. Advanced topics include lighting for camera and subject movement, depth creation, working with smoke/haze, green screens, and reflective surfaces. Students also develop skills in problem-solving, location scouting, risk assessment, and logistical planning. On-Set Training: Each student will conclude the workshop with a trainee placement on a professional film or commercial set, gaining real-world experience under the supervision of experienced DPs and gaffers — an invaluable opportunity to apply their knowledge and build industry connections
